 | The music department is committed to providing instruction that fosters creativity, skill development, critical thinking, and independent learning. We strive to instill an understanding of, and respect for, cultural perspectives as they relate to music styles. Third grade students receive instruction in the first semester on the recorder as a part of their regular curriculum. In the second semester, they experience a rotation on six different instruments, after which they can select an instrument on which to continue their musical education with their participation in the fourth and fifth grade bands. By middle school, they are ready for the Junior Varsity Jazz Band and may try out for the Village Academy Varsity Jazz Band.
The Jazz Band has performed with Arnett Howard, Mark Frye, Lee Savory, Gene Walker, and other entertainment notables. Past performance venues include: Stetson University, Universal Studios and Lake Mary High School in Florida, the Oktoberfest in Columbus, the Powell Festival, any many other Central Ohio locations. They have produced an anthology CD and plan to do more with our in-house recording studio. The ultimate goal is to achieve the highest level of personal and ensemble performance.
